The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening for College Students

Listening is one of four basic English skills that a student have to master it. Like a baby, the first process when the baby learn a language is listening the language. The baby learn new vocabulary from listening. The baby hears the word altought the baby does not know of the meaning of word, but the baby can see from the act or the figure. It is a must for an English learner to have a good ability in listening. A student can learn new vocabulary and learn how the word to say it.

Willis (1981) cited in Yagang (1999) states that listening consists of some micro skills: (a) predicting what people are going to talk about, (b) guessing at unknown words or phrases without panicking, (c) using one’s knowledge of the subject to help one understand, (d) identifying relevant points and rejecting irrelevant information, (e) retaining relevant points (note taking, summarizing), (f) recognizing discourse makers e.g. now, finally etc, (g) recognizing cohesive devices such as which, who etc, (h) understanding different intonation patterns and uses of stress, which give clues to meaning and social setting, and (i) understanding inferred information.

Kitao (1999:1) states that listening skill is an active process of receiving, interpreting and responding the messages. People call on different listening skills depending on whether their goal is to understand information, analyze and evaluative messages, or show sympathy for the feeling expressed by others in appreciating a performance.

A teacher should make the student know and understand about how important listening skill is. The teacher has make a good strategy to make the student feel enjoy in listening class like a baby when learn new language. The teacher can use authentic material or another material that appropriate with the student. It is better if the teacher doesn’t force the student too hard in listening class. It is believed that listening is natural skill that everyone can do it.

In conclusion, listening course must be fun. The students must know how important listening skill and try to make theirself as good as a baby when learn new language. And, the teacher do not force the students too hard is listening class because naturally when the student feel enjoy, they can easily to master listening skill.

"The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening Skill for college Student”.

Mr Borley (2004) said ‘’Listening is a way of listening that focuses entirely on what the other person is saying and confirms understanding of both the content of the message and the emotions and feelings underlying the message to ensure that understanding is accurate." Difficulty to learn listening, and the important study listening skill, and there are several ways to be an active listener.
Listening skill task growing more complex and difficult for student university require more attension all lecture. For students university of STAIN Bengkulu any problem abaut litening skill.Because, in STAIN Bengkulu the facilities for study listening skill very limited or the facilities not complete such as:Laboratorium, spiker one by one for student etc.if a study listening skill any two spiker. That ways not effective . require more attension all lecture,so that any raising or quality for student of STAIN.In other tahat be able rival with other university.
On the importance of oral particiration of students more attension has benn give to listening skill.thought, tends to ignore the importance of good listening skills for these young learner as well.Mr kasper (2000) said “understanding spoken English is essential in every academic subject.Good litening skills are also well, important for student university in other academic settings as well, including viewing video presentations and film, as well as simply listening to their deers in class.
several ways to be an active listener. First Stop working. Second Stop watching TV. Next Stop reading. Look at the person. Keep a good distance between you and the speaker. Don't turn away from the speaker. Don't fake listen! Repeat back phrases to clarify what the person is saying. Act like you are interested and ask questions to show that you are interested in what the person is saying. Don't interrupt the speaker. According to Thomas Gordon, "active listening involves carefully attending to and demonstrating understanding of what another person says".Active Listening is a main technique that is used in Cognitive It really makes a person feel like they are being heard and understood. You do not agree with the person, but validate by paraphasing what you hear them saying to you. A teacher can use active listening by nodding their head and then reflecting back to what the student is saying. And although in STAIN is incomplete facilities we are provided several ways to be an active listener, Stop working, Stop watching TV, Stop reading. “Insaallah” success.
Finally, active listening is a skill that good teachers and students need to develop. Active listeners listen to the person speaking instead of thinking about what they are going to say next. They reiterate what the person is trying to say in an effort to clarify and clear up any misunderstandings. They seek to understand the person and their needs before their own concerns are heard. And require more attension all lecture.

The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening for College Students
Listening is a critical element in the competent language performances of English learners, whether they are communicating at school, at work, or in the community. Especially for college students who are going to enter society after graduation. Based on teachers’ experience all around the world it can be said that listening is one of the most formidable for college students. In the language learning process, listening is one of the radical means to acquire language information and felling. In this essay the authors will discuss about some ways to develop the effectiveness of teaching listening skill for college students like practicing listening in language class, different listening materials to the class, and helping students to be master in the listening skill.

practicing listening in a language class is the fact that there are many regional varieties of English and the voice of students. The teacher is only one source of listening for students. Therefore, it is important for students to be exposed to more than one voice. Ur (1992) also adds that “learners who have some experience in listening to and understanding a number of different accents are more likely to be able to cope with further ones than those who have only heard one or two” (Ur 1992:20). On the other hand, even though I have just said that students should be able to listen to more than just their teacher, the teacher’s task is to think about the number of varieties which their students hear. “A lot depends on the students’ level of competence and on the varieties they have so far been exposed to” (Harmer 2007:133).

Teachers bring different listening materials to the classroom. These materials are of different genres and registers, such as news broadcasts, public announcements, recorded messages, songs, phone conversations, etc.). All material brought to a language classroom should be principled and ordered. “Learners should be encouraged by achieving success on less complex tasks before moving to the more complex” (Anderson and Lynch 1991:44).

Teacher should help their students to be master for listening skill. College students like to be engaged with the topic and the task. They are supposed to do. This means that they will need to look at pictures, discuss the topic or read the questions prior listening. ” that will set their minds in the right frame and make them want to listen.” ( Harmer 2007:135). The teacher’s aim goal here is to make the students ready. Preparation is vital

In conclusion, there are some ways to develop the effectiveness of teaching listening skill for college students like practicing listening in language class, different listening materials to the class, and helping students to be master in the listening skill. listening should be a part of their every day practice. That way, student will not only be soon able to participate in conversations, they also will be able to listen to different language sources, such as movies and radio.

The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening Skill for College Students
The basically learns of listening is very important in the lecture of English language Listening may say is difficult to learn because it is needs the forceful concentration to understand what which listen. Moreover, listening in English language is not our listen in daily, if we don’t know about English language, how we can understand which we listen from them. Listening in English language is different with listening which always we hear in our daily language or our language region. Certainly the both of that said same if we appeal between Indonesia language for people of Indonesia and English language for British. The people of Indonesia say that the English language is difficult, and the British also say that the Indonesia language is difficult. But, as a teacher candidate or who like English language must active in listening English language. In this essay will explains that the effectiveness of teaching listening gives some advantages for college student especially the English student in improve the understanding of English language: to add the vocabulary and improve or strengthening of grammar.
The first advantages the effectiveness of teaching listening is add vocabulary. Usually in speaking English language, we must know the vocabulary of beforehand to listen a conversation. The meaning, we must have the vocabulary. But, although our vocabulary is little to understand the conversation which listens, it is no problem if we are diligent to listens English language through music, conversation and others. We can add our vocabulary through conversations which hear and which our opinion is peculiar in our listening. Nunan (1997) emphasize that “50% of times which use student in learn strange language finished for listening”. He assert that the main key of learn strange language is “learn with your ear not with your eyes”. So, it is clearly that listening is lesson which has advantages to improve our vocabulary especially for college student of English language in studying process.
The second advantages is we can improve or strengthening of grammar. In listening usually consist of assorted of form the listening lesson. With assorted of form the listening lesson, we can investigate of grammar which use which we can make as matter in improve or strengthening of grammar. Such as, Toefl in listening which perform from various place, there listening which we hear building of grammar. We must listen with careful with our skill of grammar which understands. From the assorted of Toefl test which perform, detectable that listening skill is skill which difficult to understand for the student of Indonesia (Sadtono, 2000). This matter can comprehend because Indonesian people do not have many opportunities to listen English language except through TV, radio, film, and music. Although it is difficult, but we can learn with inch by inch and step by step from mistake of answer which we had acquire with active of test listening as manner as of time after time. We as a English student must can effective in teaching listening skill such as Toefl to improve and strengthening our skill of grammar.
So, although we are not born and enlarging in state of English, we as a college student of English language must active listening English language. Because in learning of listening, there are many advantages which we can such as help us to add the vocabulary and also to improve and strengthening of grammar. Such as aphorism said “sambil menyelam minum air“. So, although the listening is difficult, if we always active in learn listening, we will can beyond the difficulty. And the successful will we achieve.

The college students should full concern to consider which is true one or wrong. Critical consideration about the true assumption of material is a major concern in listening because the worst error can’t be avoided if we are wrong to take the meaning of listening material. Nicholas stated that “following false assumptions may have delayed of training programs in effecive listening.” In the other hand, poor vocabularies of college students becomes great matter that can’t be solved till now, so the college students can’t develop their understanding and always be wrong in giving assumption. But, better organizing in teching active listening guides them to get much vocabularies so the purpose of teaching English listening can be reached. The ability of paraphrase that shows better vocabularies may be the next points that can’t be separated from listening. Otherwise, lack of education makes them difficult to pharaprase the message. It’s a fact, if we ask students about pharaphrase, they tend to be confuse about it. Low comprehension about new vocabularies that appears in listening makes the feedback step can’t be ran well.
The teaching active listening makes the students active and always try to develop their interpretation based on relation of each sentence. Listening as well requires attention, thought, interpretation, and imagination. To improve our learners' listening skills we should let them (Austin Shrope, 1970): adopt a positive attitude, be responsive, shut out distractions, listen for the speaker's purpose, look for the signals of what is to come, look for summaries of what has gone before, evaluate the supporting materials and look for non-verbal clues. All the points that was conveyed by Austin shrope give us the directions so we can get ease looking for the meaning of listening material. Sometimes, we don’t realize that by listening, we know about english culture implicitly. We know about their culture, their attitude, how to speak each other and so forth. It can make us ease to understand another subject such as cultural understanding and etc.
In conclusion, the teaching active listening is so important for us to gain our comprehension. By listening actively, we learn about the culture and another attitude in English. Poor listening habits that is always the college habits can be solved because the teaching active listening needs them be active and get used them to be more attentive students. If all points can be done well, the effectiveness of teaching listening for college students can be reached also.

"The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening Skill for college Student”

Listening is an important skill that we all need to master and as a basis language.listening Listening is one of the easiest things to all people, because they heard from the vocabulary of his own language. but for a student who especially English language programs, they have difficulty in listening. because the vocabulary they are learning the English vocabulary is not the vernacular. Some students convince themselves that they can not understand spoken English well and create problems for themselves ..

Teaching listening skills is one of the most difficult tasks for teacher. This is because successful listening skills are acquired over time and with lots of practice. It's frustrating for students because there are no rules as in grammar teaching. Speaking and writing also have very specific exercises that can lead to improved skills. This is not to say that there are not ways of improving listening skills, however they are difficult to quantify.
One of the biggest problem for students is often mental block. While listening, a student suddenly decides that he or she doesn't understand what is being said. At this point, many students just tune out or get caught up in an internal dialogue trying translate a specific word. They key to helping students improve their listening skills is to convince them that not understanding is OK. This is more of an attitude adjustment than anything else, and it is easier for some students to accept than others. Another important thing that a teacher wants to try to teach students with different amounts of success. that they need to listen to English as often as possible, but for short periods of time.

According to Bulletin (1952), listening is one of the fundamental language skills. It's a medium through which children, young people and adults gain a large portion of their education--their information, their understanding of the world and of human affairs, their ideals, sense of values, and their appreciation. In this day of mass communication (much of it oral), it is of vital importance that our pupils be taught to listen effectively and critically, he says.
The conclusion is that learning to listen is very important. if we do not have the ability in listening we will not know what in talking about the person. listening is also accompanied by a master vocabulary. to be able to listen is to learn to hold one at a time they'll be good.

A student is a learner, or someone who came to university and attend an education institution. For college students, listening is one of the basic of English skill if we want to be a master. Listening has some obstacle for all aspects. Such as, communication system and sense. Communication system is a medium to listen such as, sound system, a room of soundproof, and others. Sense is ears. Good ears are ears can response that other college students say. We are created by God with two ears and one mouth, if you are wrong to listen, you are wrong to say. There are three effectiveness of teaching listening skill for college students, find a meaning that someone say, be a good listener, and answer the questions.
“what do you say”. It is one of our word if we don’t understand. Each word has a mean although only one word. Research has demonstrated that adults spend 40-50% of communication time listening (Gilman & Moody 1984), but the importance of listening in language learning has only been recognized relatively recently (Oxford 1993). Naturally, we can understand that she/ he say if we take the gist, not to translate one by one. We as college students have to increase our vocabulary, because it is one of our supplies to understand what someone say. But it opposite with listening comprehension in one of the Bengkulu’s university. There are bad vocabulary, bad teacher, bad room, and other. It makes our ability be bad. So, what we have to do? It is big question for next generation to finish that.
By the mouth, someone say something. And by the ears, someone listen something too. Someone has good ability because someone always practice and try. Someone has bad ability because has two obstacle. First, never practice and try at home. Second is disruption of ears. Good listener is someone that able to catch the information that sent. It is same with our life.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHINGN LISTENING SKILL FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS
Listening is one of the program of English subject. Listening always trade on the ability of the college students. Analysis, understand, and translate that someone say from the medium. The medium are sound system or mouth. Two unsure can’t break. So, listening process and purpose will be discussion.
Listening is an invisible mental process, making difficult to describe. Listeners must discriminate between sounds, understand vocabulary and grammatical structures, interpret stress and intention, retain and interpret this within the immediate as well as the larger socio-cultural context of the utterance (Wipf, 1984). There are two distinct processes involved in listening comprehension. Listeners use 'top-down' processes when they use prior knowledge to understand the meaning of a message. On the other hand, listeners also use 'bottom-up' processes when they use linguistic knowledge to understand the meaning of a message. It opposite with our understanding. We don’t know anything before we know the translate. So the question is “is it realization in our life?”. I answer. “maybe”. It can do if we try and make it be easy.
Our purpose is be a teacher. So we have to try to do it. Even so with the listening skill, we have to make our purpose to make the some question be easy to know. But it makes us be confuse if don’t make our ability. We can try with practice, learn of the mistake. Naturally, our ability is bad but use our mine. The purpose of listening is to demonstrate the ability once owned by the student while he was in college. each capabilities will always be used to achieve the name of a destination
The conclusion is process and purpose has always been a booster of good in listening. Never to try to eliminate one of them therefore can’t be separated, but based in reality there are a few of the universities in Bengkulu who do not pay attention one of them. So, basically the ability to analyze, understand, through the process, and setting goals is the right choice for listening skills..

The effectiveness of teaching listening skill for college students

in this essay the describe about the effectivness of teaching listening skill for college student is not interesting,it is supported by some evidences.
such as:The motivation of student is low, teaching method is bored, teaching system is monotous.etc

motivatios is the most imfortant to increase studying result,in the other hand, motivation of student is low,it is supported by some fact, such as:sometimes student come late in the class.Student just kidding each other. If indicates that the student is low spirit in teaching english, effectiveness if teaching listening also dipenden strategies of teacher is teaching ,Interesting strategies makes students give full attention to this subject.

Teaching method is bored, interesting teaching method is needed to motivate student spirit .Listening lecturer uses bored teaching method, bad method from lecturer makes the effectiveness of listening difficult to be reached.

Lecturer should review new system for effectiveness monotous teaching system will make bored student,so,they have no spirit to join listening class, the fact listening lecturer uses bored and monotous method.

The listener our learner's listening skill we should let them[Austin shrope,1970]Adopt a positive attitude be responsive, shut out disttractions listen for the speakers purpose, look for the signals of what is to come, look for summaries of what has gone before, evaluate the supporting materials and look for non verbal clues.

    in conclussion.The author find facts,
such as.There is no language laboratirium, bored teaching, monotous teaching. The author suggest building language laboratory using interesting teaching.Method and review for new teaching system for improving future, should be combined with modern issue. So,the college of students know about the circumstances of our country. The best method most be main concerned in effectiveness of teaching listening because it can overcome the students problems including the low spirit of students in teaching listening.

  21. Listening is one of the foundations in learning English language support. because by listening we can easily know the words spoken by English people. but, learning English also require an effective way to be easy to learn. there are some easy ways for students to learn listening quickly.
Teaching the skill of listening cannot be emphasized enough in a communicative classroom. For language learners, developing the skill of listening comprehension is extremely important. Students with good listening comprehension skills are better able to participate effectively in class (Brown, 2001).
Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. This involves understanding a speaker's accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning (Howatt and Dakin). An able listener is capable of doing these four things simultaneously. Willis (1981:134) lists a series of micro-skills of listening, which she calls enabling skills. They are:
    • predicting what people are going to talk about
    • guessing at unknown words or phrases without panic
    • using one's own knowledge of the subject to help one understand
    • identifying relevant points; rejecting irrelevant information
    • retaining relevant points (note-taking, summarizing)
    • recognizing discourse markers, e. g. , Well; Oh, another thing is; Now, finally; etc.
recognizing cohesive devices, e. g. , such as and which, including linking words, pronouns, references, etc.
    • understanding different intonation patterns and uses of stress, etc. , which give clues to meaning and social setting
    • understanding inferred information, e. g. , speakers' attitude or intentions.
listening may add an emotional and dramatic quality. Radio and recordings highlight the importance of listening. Listening is as active as speaking (the other receptive skill), and in some ways even more difficult. It well requires attention, thought, interpretation, and imagination. According to Austin Shrope(1970) To improve our learners' listening skills we should let them. Adopt a positive attitude, Be responsive, Shut out distractions, Listen for the speaker's purpose, Look for the signals of what is to come, Look for summaries of what has gone before, Evaluate the supporting materials and Look for non-verbal clues.
so learning should not complicate yourself. listening can easily be studied with full concentration. listening can also easily through the songs for the likes music. And studying listening must have fun.

THE EFFECT OF NEW REGULATION SMA 2011
National Examination is the term of assessment of competency of learner nationally in elementary and secondary Education. In 2011 The education ministry had make regulation ,which they were take conseration ,the pattern of five packets and implementation of the just once,
Implementation of system policy ,and new regulation of course will have positive and negative effect, although this new system has been decided based on analysis result of the evaluation and input from some parties.
The positive effect that appear of the new regulation like as, the spirit of SBM (school based management) will be excited and classroom based management ,where ach school was give n the freedom to develope themselves “(compass ,com ,2011 )
The new regulation can reduce cheating in the exam room and also with there new regulation the student’s activities will be more passionate and excited about of result learning assessment of each semester will have a direct impact on student’s graduation, But with their positive effect of the new regulation it also has negative effect as, the school are bad can be will take advantages of this loophone to help students, so those students can graduation and the teacher can give good point for their Student, although their student are lazy
The new regulation 2011 are generally more realistic ,normative and the propective of education system that is develope today, especially the school bases of management system, but it also has negative effect of students ,teacher and education in Indonesian

  23. Listening one of important element in the competent to increase our knowledge, whether they are communicating at school, at work, or in the community. Through the normal course of a day, listening is used nearly twice as much as speaking and four to five times as much as reading and writing. Listening equally essential receptive skills not merely in teaching and learning, but they are important in the process of developing English students and cognitive development. Developing all of them of these skills is the best gift that teachers and parents can ever give to their young learners in order to foster learners’ language and communicative competency

However, listening classrooms have limited or little opportunities to practice listening and reading skills together and the questions only test the students’ linguistic knowledge, rather than training them how to listen to and read or how to develop strategies of these dual skills (Brown, 2000). We clearly saw these meaningless concepts from those traditional books that have a number of tasks which the exercises are to test the students’ memory and knowledge, not their comprehension skills. But In fact, teaching children listening skills is one of the most important traits we as adult human beings can help them develop for many different reasons, ranging from academic and real world success to becoming a friend and experiencing true friendship (Lightbown & Spada, 1999).

Listening skills are developed, and the more we practice the more skilled we become at teaching children listening skills. So, it stands to reason that the more time we spend teaching children listening skills by reading to our kids, the more they practice their active listening skills and the better they become at it (Brown H. , 2000). Within effort and dedication, interesting and meaningful materials would help to maintain learners’ motivation in learning and develop their confidence in using language in real life context.
language teaching approaches like task-based approach since, the integrated lessons are more effective than teaching language in isolation and provide opportunities for learners to practice given language components in real life situation which could develop their motivation and performance (Brown H. , 2000). They would be appropriate to their age, standard, preference and even their learning style. Group works and pair works are considered as primary methods of learners’ tasks. However, there would be a few individual tasks in means of assessing individuals’ performance as well as to assess effectiveness of teaching.

  24. Listening to spoken language has been acknowledged theoretically to consist of active and complex processes which determine the level and content of comprehension. Listeners engage in a variety of mental processes in an effort to comprehend information from oral texts. They focus on selected aspects of aural input, construct meaning from passages, and relate what they hear to existing knowledge. However, there is hardly a perfect match between input and knowledge; comprehension gaps occur and special efforts to educe meaning are required, especially for second language learners. The mental processes that are activated by listeners to understand, learn, or to retain new information from utterances are referred to as listening comprehension strategies.
According to Mendelsohn (1984), L2 learners often do not approach the listening task in the most efficient way despite what they may do in their L1. Chamot & Kupper (1989) also found that L2 learners did not use a very large number of strategies when listening. With the increased attention to learner-centered models of L2 instruction, it is imperative that the teacher not only be a provider of comprehensible input, but be a trainer of listening strategies.
listening is by far the most frequently used. Listening and speaking are often taught together, but beginners, especially non-literate ones, should be given more listening than speaking practice. It's important to speak as close to natural speed as possible, although with beginners some slowing is usually necessary. Without reducing your speaking speed, you can make your language easier to comprehend by simplifying your vocabulary, using shorter sentences, and increasing the number and length of pauses in your speech.

Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. This involves understanding a speaker's accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning .
Given the importance of listening in language learning and teaching, it is essential for language teachers to help their students become effective listeners. In the communicative approach to language teaching, this means modeling listening strategies and providing listening practice in authentic situations: those that learners are likely to encounter when they use the language outside the classroom.

By raising students' awareness of listening as a skill that requires active engagement, and by explicitly teaching listening strategies, instructors help their students develop both the ability and the confidence to handle communication situations they may encounter beyond the classroom. In this way they give their students the foundation for communicative competence in the new language.

So Listening important to speak as close to natural speed as possible, although with beginners some slowing is usually necessary. Without reducing your speaking speed, you can make your language easier to comprehend by simplifying your vocabulary, using shorter sentences, and increasing the number and length of pauses in your speech.

"The effectiveness of Teaching Listening for College Students"

Listening is a learned skill set that gives us the opportunity.Listening is one of four basic English skills that a student have to master it. But, in listening we maust listen be carefully because, English listening implies the students gaining their understanding because they must listen carefully to understand what the speaker is saying.
Teachers are well aware of the fact that every classroom is full of students who are different from each other in many different ways. Each student comes from a different social, economic and cultural background, each one has different areas of interest, different ways of expressing themselves, different strengths and weaknesses, and now the teacher is being asked to be aware of the fact that each student also has their own individual intelligence profile.
Brown and Yule (1983) categorize spoken texts into three broad types: static, dynamic, and abstract. Texts that describe objects or give instructions are static texts; those that tell a story or recount an incident are dynamic texts; those that focus on someone’s ideas and beliefs rather than on concrete objects are abstract texts. Brown and Yule suggest that the three types of input should be provided according to the difficulties they present and the students’ level. They draw a figure, in which difficulty increases from left to right, and, within any one type of input, complexity increases from top to bottom.
Ur (1984:7) points out that “in ordinary conversation or even in much extempore speech-making or lecturing we actually say a good deal more than would appear to be necessary in order to convey our message. Redundant utterances may take the form of repetitions, false starts, re-phrasings, self-corrections, elaborations, tautologies, and apparently meaningless additions such as I mean or you know.” This redundancy is a natural feature of speech and may be either a help or a hindrance, depending on the students’ level. It may make it more difficult for beginners to understand what the speaker is saying; on the other hand, it may give advanced students more time to “tune in” to the speaker’s voice and speech style.
Weinstein and Mayer (1986) defined learning strategies (LS) broadly as "behaviours and thoughts that a learner engages in during learning" which are "intended to influence the learner's encoding process" (p. 315). Later Mayer (1988) more specifically defined LS as "behaviours of a learner that are intended to influence how the learner processes information" (p. 11). These early definitions from the educational literature reflect the roots of LS in cognitive science, with its essential assumptions that human beings process information and that learning involves such information processing. Clearly, LS are involved in all learning, regardless of the content and context. LS are thus used in learning and teaching math, science, history, languages and other subjects, both in classroom settings and more informal learning environments.

In conclusion, the teaching active listening is so important for us to gain our comprehension. listening course must be fun. The students must know how important listening skill and try to make theirself as good as a baby when learn new language. If, all points can be well, the effectiveness of teaching listening will be good.

The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening Skill for college Student

In English study we have 4 ability such us writing, listening, speaking and reading. We must be master for each ability, actually for teacher. Every ability have problem for teach in class, but we can handle that problem with some strategies. In this essay tell about how to make student feel enjoy in the class, and suggestion student to active.
A teacher should make the student know and understand about how important listening skill is. The teacher has make a good strategy to make the student feel enjoy in listening. The teacher can use authentic material or another material that appropriate with the student. Yagang (1999) states that listening consists of some micro skills: (a) predicting what people are going to talk about, (b) guessing at unknown words or phrases without panicking, (c) using one’s knowledge of the subject to help one understand It is better if the teacher doesn’t force the student too hard in listening class. It is believed that listening is natural skill that everyone can do it.
Teachers bring different listening materials to the classroom. These materials are of different genres and registers, such as news broadcasts, public announcements, recorded messages, songs, phone conversations, etc.). All material brought to a language classroom should be principled and ordered. Teacher should help their students to be master for listening skill. College students like to be engaged with the topic and the task.
active listening is a skill that every one need to learn. As teachers we need to let our student feel that we are listening to them and hearing what they are saying. Also, we need to use active listening with our college. It is important to listen and show you are listening, even if you do not agree. Students need to be taught active listening skill.
In conclusion, we can take conclusion that skill listening is very need and important for English student. As a English student can not listening in English. We will have many problems when we want to teach other people. But, we can manage that problem with make student feel enjoy in the class, and suggestion student to active communication. Without listening skill well, we can not do communication well and skill listening is very help us to achieve our success in works.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHINGN LISTENING SKILL FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

Listening is one of the foundations in learning English language support. because by listening we can easily know the words spoken by English people. In this essay focus on how to Listening exercises should be as natural as the situations from which they grow.

Listening to and understanding speech involves a number of basic processes, some depending upon linguistic competence, some depending upon previous knowledge that is not necessarily of a purely linguistic nature, and some depending upon psychological variables that affect the mobilization of these competence and knowledge in the particular task situation. The listener must have a continuous set to listen and understand, and as he hears the utterance, he may be helped by some kind of set to process and remember the information transmitted. His linguistic competence enables him, presumably, to recognize the formatives of the heard utterance, i. e. , to dissect out of the wave form of the morphemes, words, and other meaning-bearing elements of the utterance.
In conclusion, The teacher can easily adapt to listening exercises those situations through which the text presents oral drills and communicative activities, just by giving them a slightly different twist. Listening exercises should be as natural as the situations from which they grow.

This involves understanding a speaker's accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning (Howatt and Dakin). In this essay tell about how to important to speak as close to natural speed as possible and make student become be easy enough to contextualize the aural practice as well
According to Mendelsohn (1984), L2 learners often do not approach the listening task in the most efficient way despite what they may do in their L1. listening is by far the most frequently used. Listening and speaking are often taught together, but beginners, especially non-literate ones, should be given more listening than speaking practice. It's important to speak as close to natural speed as possible, although with beginners some slowing is usually necessary.
For listening comprehension exercises, we tend to read passages, record news or broadcasts, or prepare lectures. All of them have value, but they are extremely difficult sources for early practice in selective listening. This type of listening exercises does not present the redundancies, the colloquialisms, the hesitations, the gestures and the facial expressions that are an inseparable part of the spoken language. They emphasize informational content and fail to provide the signals used to communicate information and meaning.
The teacher asks the students to listen to the tape very carefully. And he gives information lists to the students. While they are listening to the tape they try to fill the blanks with appropriate information. If no information appears for any blank on the list, students are asked to put a cross on the blank provided for the required information.
In conclusion, Since most of the actual listening the student will be exposed to outside of the class is likely to be real-life conversation, it seems wisest to use materials cast in real-life situations for listening comprehension exercises -at least at the beginning level. If the oral instruction of the course is contextualized -set into a " situation " - it should be easy enough to contextualize the aural practice as well

Everyone who writes about learning to listen to regret the lack of expertise in the field of communications. teachers who take the time to listen to students will benefit, and they will greatly appreciate the rare opportunity to be heard. This will increase the effectiveness of professors as teachers significantly. However, learning to listen is very difficult for teachers because many of those who really want to talk. Listening skills are also essential to provide effective advice and guidanceAs a teacher the first thing to do is create a way so they can listen. To be known as someone who listens, you must provide plenty of time for students before and after the class is underway. Students should come to class, to talk with professors significantly by coming to the professor's office. Plan to come to class five or ten minutes early. Not only will it give you the opportunity to ensure that the room was ready for class, but will send a subtle message that you are interested in and hope for the class.

A professor is an important attitude. Those who want to help students to telegraph this attitude to them. In general, people who are classified as a type of feeling on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (see Chapter 13) will have an easier time to convey to students the impression that they wanted to hear. Thinking types have to think about the feelings of students. If no progress, offer to talk with the student privately after class.
There are times (Herrick and Giordano, 1991) "when a student is a rationalization of the difficulties and needs to be told frankly to make attitude adjustments and work harder (or more efficient)". When he was blunt with the students, tell him the possible consequences of action or inaction, but without the character analysis
Nonverbal messages include facial expressions, eye contact or lack of eye contact, interpersonal distance, hand gestures, and body language (Axtell, 1991; Miller, 1980). In Western cultures direct eye contact with occasional breaking and reforming of the contact is expected. Leaning forward is usually interpreted as a sign of interest, as are nods and encouraging hand gestures. Clenched fists are often interpreted as anger, as are angry facial expressions. These are powerful signals which most individuals raised in a Western culture transmit and receive unconsciously (Axtell, 1991). The signals are often so powerful that words are ignored if they are incongruent with the message.
An alternative response is to use a probe such as “Well, what are you going to do about it?” There is a final use for silence. When a student breaks down and starts crying in your office (yes, this can happen), one appropriate response is to offer a tissue and be silent until he or she has regained control.
So, we as professor or teacher, we must teach not only looking into from one side, to be later we are as lecturer not laden with items which we teach, because we have owned device teach and have program teach which have been drawn up previously.

  31. Listening is one of the most important concepts in learning English. in the study of listening in need with strategies are techniques or activities that contribute directly to the comprehension and recall of listening input. Listening strategies can be classified by how the listener processes the input. This essay will explain listening strategies and techniques to enhances learning.
    Listening Techniques to Enhance Learning
Students will gain the most from pod casts if they employ strategic listening techniques to consolidate their learning. Mendelsohn (1994) offers seven techniques that will help the listeners focus on any listening activity.

    * Listen for one crucial detail.
    * Listen for all the details.
    * Listen for the gist
    * Listen for mood and atmosphere.
    * Listen for the main idea.
    * Listen to form hypotheses and make predictions.
    * Listen to make an inference.
    Listening Strategies
Top-down strategies are listener based; the listener taps into background knowledge of the topic, the situation or context, the type of text, and the language. This background knowledge activates a set of expectations that help the listener to interpret what is heard and anticipate what will come next. Top-down strategies include
The goal of listening instruction is to prepare students to understand actual speech in order to communicate in English. Rost (2002) states that L2 listeners must learn to cope with “genuine” speech and “authentic” listening situations. That is, listeners must be able to understand natural English speech to meet their own needs as members of the English-speaking community (pp. 123-123). However, learners find that many aspects of authentic listening situations are not under their control. To meet that challenge, teachers provide L2 listeners with strategy training (Mendelsohn, 1994, 1995). L2 listeners may have to start listening from the middle of a conversation, having to attune to the conversation while simultaneously trying to understand it. A listening lesson can be adapted to teach learners how to cope with that situation. In other real-world contexts, learners have on-going L1 conversations with friends, or follow issues or programs that interest them. Offering students guidance for similar, thematic listening in the L2 can help them pursue their listening interests in English outside the classroom.
So listening was in dire need full concentration and a comfortable atmosphere to help us learn English. Listening is also very influential with the vocabulary, pressure, and the code to be easily digested.

In Murphey’s language hungry , this method is referred as “ shdowing”, and can be used with language tapes as well as other situasitions. We can practice this anytime by silently repeating phrases. Effectiveenees of Teaching Listening Skill for College Students

Listening is a communication technique that requires the listener to understood, interpret, and evaluate what someone hear. The ability to listen actively can improve personal relationship through reducing conflicts, strengthning cooperation, anb fostering understanding.

When interacting, students often are not listening attentively. We may be distracted, thinking about other things, or thinking about what we are going to say next ( the latter case is particularly true in conflict situations or disagreements.
Listening is a structured way of listening and responding to others, focusing attention on the speaker. Suspending one's own frame of reference, suspending judgment and avoiding other internal mental activities are important to fully attend to the speaker.

There are three primary elements that comprise active listening: comprehending, retaining, and responding.
Comprehending is shared meaning between parties in a communication transaction. This is the first step in the listening process. The first challenge for the listener is accrately identifying speech sounds and understanding and synthesizing these sounds as words. We are constantly bombarded with auditory stimuli, so the listener has to select which of those stimuli are speech sounds and choose to pay attention to the appropriate sounds. The second challange is being able to discern breaks between discernable words, or speech segmentation. This becomes significantly more difficult with an unfamiliar language because the speech sounds blend together into a continuous cluster.
Retaining is the second step in the listening pros

The Effectiveness of Teaching Listening Skill

Listening is one of the most important, yet most underrated, management skills. But become an effective listener really requires concentration, effort and time. Listening comprehension may be the most difficult task for nearly all students of English as a foreign language. This is because successful listening skills are acquired over time and with lots of practice. This not to say that there is no way to improve listening skill, but they are difficult to measure. Therefore, I will give some ways to increase the effectiveness of teaching listening skill.
First, according to Lanartco. “ Listening Skills to develop a dedicated training to enhance skill sets associated with active listening.“ For this, I will give suggestion, for example, when someone speak in English, we must focus or full attention about what she or he say. On the other hand, talking and writing also have many specific exercise that can lead to enhanced skills. If a student continues this exercise for two or three months, their listening skills will greatly enhance.
Second, in the article “ English Listening Skills and Activities Listening Practice ”, to increase the effectiveness of teaching listening skills, student recommended to get a movie or listen a British radio station. Through this exercise we will develop our own style of communication and natural ways to utilize active listening skills to enhance the understanding of others. In my opinion, if the student do not understand anything, they should do the teaching listening frequently.
Finally, we must often to use of language lab, reading books and listening exercise without looking at the books. Student often have to listen, but they have a short time, five to ten minutes. Listen as a friend is to dictate and write down what did hear and check the truth. To exercise, join in a language club.
As a conclusion, in the effectiveness of teaching listening skill, we must often listen a dialog or essay which use English language. Then, do it frequently in order to obtain a perfect understanding.

Audio Visual Method as the Effective Way of Teaching Listening

English is an international language. People understand each other by using language and that is why there are many people learning English. English plays important role in education, business or governance. In our country, English as a foreign language is taught from elementary schools until college and universities. English subject is regarded as ‘Muatan Lokal’ in elementary schools. It is also studied as an obligatory course at junior and senior high schools until colleges and universities. There are many skills in language; they are speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In here the writer would like to explain about listening skill regarding with the effective teaching to college students.
Listening is important in all aspects of our life, especially in communication. By listening, they can get information from media they listen. And if they have good listening, they will have ability to understand conversation in English.
There are many methods in teaching listening. According to Nunan ( 12:231) one of them is audio visual. Audio visual is one of methods that English teachers can use to teach listening. It means that this method uses audio visual media to help students comprehending conversation that they listen.
For many people, especially students, listening is considered to be a difficult subject. It is because sometimes the students especially beginners get difficulties in learning listening. It can be seen when they express their ideas after they listen sentences in English. The students sometimes cannot paraphrase what they have listened. One of the reasons is that they have less motivation to listen sentences in English because of some factors like vocabulary, media they use for listening, and maybe the internal factor like the problem on the students’ hearing.
Lamb (1989:34) said, “Audio visual media is more interesting than merely audio media.” It is due to the fact that audio visual media provides pictures and sound that can serve more attractive teaching and learning. Teachers can serve songs, films, folktales or other related interesting materials to help the students understand what they listen. Besides, audio visual media can help the students understand the listening materials based on the context the students can see and listen. And this tends to be easier to understand than only use audio media such as tape recorder or radio. Furthermore, people from all ages or levels of educations including college students will be interested in this method because this can kill students’ boredom in learning listening skill. It will take the students out of the conventional way of learning listening that uses audio media. Therefore, with this method, hopefully it can help students to understand listening materials in English.
Based on the statements above, it can be concluded that audio visual can be the effective way of teaching listening skill for college students.

For example, you may have one student interview another for a job with a company or for an article in a newspaper. Even a storytelling activity, such as one that answers the question "What was your favorite movie from last year?" can give students the opportunity to ask one another questions and then to practice active listening skills.

    Video Segments
Another helpful resource for teaching listening skills are video segments, including short sketches, news programs, documentary films, interview segments, and dramatic and comedic material. As with audio segments, select the portion and length of the video segment based on the skill level of your students. With your students, first watch the segment without any sound and discuss it together. Encourage the students to identify what they think will be the content of the segment. Then, watch the segment again, this time with sound, allowing students to take notes if helpful for their skill level. After the completion of the video segment, you can have students write a brief summary of the segment, or you can take time to discuss as a group how the segment compares with the students' expectations.

Whatever method you use for teaching listening, keep a few key instructional tips in mind that will help both you and your students navigate the learning process. Two, keep your directions accessible and build in opportunities for students not only to ask clarifying questions, but also to make mistakes. Three, help students navigate their communication anxiety by developing activities appropriate to their skill and confidence level, and then strengthen their confidence by celebrating the ways in which they do improve, no matter how small.
